Getting Started

  1. Install Dictat from the App Store.
  2. Open Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard and select Dictat.
  3. Tap Dictat in the keyboard list and enable Allow Full Access. This is required so the keyboard can use the microphone. No data ever leaves your device.
  4. In any app, tap the globe icon on your keyboard to switch to Dictat, then tap Start Dictate and speak. Your text is inserted automatically when you stop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Dictat work offline?

Yes. Dictat uses an on-device speech recognition model and works entirely without an internet connection.

Does Dictat collect any data?

No. Dictat does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data. There are no analytics, no accounts, and no tracking of any kind.

The keyboard is not showing up

Make sure you added Dictat in Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. If it still doesn't appear, try restarting your device. Occasionally iOS needs a restart to register new keyboards.

Transcription is not accurate

Dictat works best in a quiet environment. Speak clearly and at a natural pace. The on-device model handles English well; accuracy may vary for strong accents or very noisy backgrounds.

The app opens when I tap "Start Dictate"

This is expected. Due to iOS restrictions, keyboard extensions cannot access the microphone directly. Dictat briefly opens the main app to record your voice, then returns the transcribed text to the keyboard. This happens quickly and automatically.
